oaky, I like this a lot: "If we could start practicing shalom in the small, simple places like goose ponds, recycling bins, or kindness to our co-workers, we might just ritualize ourselves into being the kind of people that live as a city on a hill, glowing with the goodness and love of God."
You touched on something that seemingly gets glossed over with 'christian-isms'; those things christians say with an assumption that 'we all understand...' when actuality, some don't. It's easy to join the conversation with head nods and agreement with very little understanding happening. Christian ethics is beautiful, complex and yet, may just be overtly simple. Can't wait to read more
Thanks, Kyndra! Yes, I think we assume a lot, and we've long been working under the assumption that we can argue people into the kingdom. Perhaps there was a day when this could work, back when (white) Christian morality and culture were the norm, but we're not there anymore, at least not like we were. It's city on a hill time.
Right? I would go as far to say, I am not sure that ever 'worked'. I do believe People are inherently moved by good. It's the tale old as time, good versus evil but not in the generic sense ; it's so much deeper and nuanced. It's thinking outside oneself to appreciate all creation (animals, nature and humans) and then go steps further to walk out appreciation. God is love, holy, righteous, and always about His creation. How truly humbly I get to be apart of something so much bigger than my own paradigm. City on a hill indeed.
